Pro Dan Lussen presents our 3rd Winter Training Session (Outdoors, 2-day) |
Pondview Kennels Staatsburg, NY |
|
The last of our Winter Field Training seminars will feature professional trainer, Dan Lussen who will help us put obedience and marking skills together in the field with birds. Dan routinely works with a variety of hunting breeds; he has a Lab and spaniels as his personal hunting dogs, he has put many Field Championships on spaniels, and he professionally trains retrievers, spaniels and pointing breeds.
Dan is gifted in his ability to "read" dogs quickly and accurately, working equally well with hard and soft dogs. He demands high standards of performance while always encouraging and rewarding effort. His approach is to build upon whatever talents a dog brings into the field. Each dog is offered a biscuit after completing their work in the field, whether they are a field trial champion or a disinterested bird dog being patiently trained to want to retrieve birds.
In addition, Pondview Kennels is the home of Ray Caccio, internationally known for his work with both English springer spaniels and cocker spaniels. He is a two-time winner of the English Springer Spaniel National, was part of the team that produced the most recent dual champion American cocker spaniel, and was recently quoted in the AKC Gazette on the importance of bidability in field prospects. We hope he drops by for a visit!
This seminar is appropriate for dog and handler teams with all levels of experience. This will be a friendly, encouraging place to "try field." We are here to learn, not compete. We will start each day with more advanced dogs working in cover with multiple marks, maybe a blind or two. Then, we will address the building blocks needed to get there: heel, sit, stay, hold, fetch, coming when called, and especially bird handling. Marking concepts and drills to enhance memory, as well as methods for increasing the length and difficulty of retrieves will be addressed provided there is time. Beginning dogs and puppies can work on the lawn. If time and weather permit, we may be able to do some water work.
DATES & TIMES:
COSTS: $75.00 per working dog per day, $45.00 for observers per day. We will take 15 working teams, priority being given to members of Hudson Valley Golden Retriever Club. (Fee includes lunch for all attendees and flyers for working dogs.)
EQUIPMENT: This seminar will be held in rain, snow, sleet or shine so be prepared with appropriate clothing, chair, umbrellas, bug spray, sunscreen and the equipment you use when you train and run your dog in the field (collars, slip lead, long line, etc.) as well as water for your dog, cooling fans, sun shades for the car, etc.

Sessions
Hudson Valley's Elizabeth Wilson is Director of Training for Westchester Retriever Club, so call or e-mail her if you want to try it. She guarantees your dog and you will get a work out.
There are also training sessions on some weekends. Fields and ponds will be assigned to groups on a rotation like last year, so let Elizabeth know who is in your group, the name of your group leader, and she will put you in the rotation. Again, if you don't have a group, Elizabeth will find one for you!! Fees will be the same as last year:
